Yet fees, licences and support are what carry the months when projects slow down. The report recognises revenue that repeats regularly and separates it from revenue that is just starting and from one-off sales. Then it calculates how much revenue remains if your main recurring customer leaves.

Two large new contracts cover them. The report breaks growth down: how much comes from new customers, how much you lost with those who stopped buying and how much changed with those who stayed. It also emails you when a customer is billing less, months before the drop shows in the year’s accounts.

Part of it comes from foreign suppliers through TD17 documents and, for goods bought from other EU countries, TD18 documents. The report splits spending by supplier category and compares it with companies of the same sector and size, without ever judging a single supplier. Since July 2022 the esterometro (the old quarterly report of cross-border invoices) is gone, so your company has to send the TD17 document by the 15th of the following month, with VAT recorded as both payable and deductible in the same month. In a software company these purchases weigh a lot: the report reads them like any other invoice, adds them up by type and keeps them apart from reverse charge between Italian companies. Your accountant carries on as before and, if you wish, receives the report in copy.

Questions

How do you measure a software company’s recurring revenue?

The report works it out from invoices: it needs at least four invoices to the same customer, in four different months, with regular amounts. Revenue with at least twelve months of history is consolidated, the rest is emerging. In the sample report consolidated recurring revenue is 61.6% of the last twelve months’ revenue, against a sector median of 34.5%.

Does the esterometro still exist in 2026?

No. Since 1 July 2022 it has been replaced by sending TD17, TD18 and TD19 documents to SDI by the 15th of the following month. For a software company these are mostly cloud services and licences bought from foreign suppliers. The report reads them every month: in the sample company foreign purchases come to €120.0k over seven months.

How is payroll cost calculated from the Cassetto Fiscale?

From the INPS (social security) contributions paid with F24, checked against the CU and the Modello 770. The report rebuilds the cost month by month and tells you whether the three sources agree. In the sample report payroll costs €244.2k over seven months, 32.6% of revenue, with nine employees and consistent sources.

How much do cloud and hosting weigh on spending?

In the sample software company cloud and hosting are the largest item, at 34.4% of purchases, followed by IT consulting at 25.8%. The share varies with the business model, and the report measures it every month, splitting spending by category based on the supplier’s ATECO code written on the invoice.

Does it work for IT consulting and hosting companies?

Yes. The report reads companies with codes 62.02, 62.09 and 63.11 with the same structure used for software development, and compares them with companies under the same six-digit code: 57 of them in the sample report. The sector comes from the ATECO code registered for the company.
